To a small town like Port Orford, it was quite an effort to create a new library outside of the City Hall.
It took years of effort, lots of fundraising, community meetings, grants, and an amazing amount of donated time and labor, as well as money.
The result is a great public space for reading, research, meetings, lectures, classes and workshops. It offers free Internet access, a paperback exchange, programs for children and adults. And of course books, video and audio books, magazines, newspapers, fax and copy service.

In their own words: "Whomever walks through the doors of our library is entering a learning opportunity. We welcome you into such an environment, where the staff and volunteers will work with you to explore all options with an open mind, be persistent in our quests, and embrace the unexpected. We enjoy our work, and invite you to enjoy your visit - whether to use the public Internet, catch up on the latest news, or check out materials."

Ken Hughes carved this amazing bench from maple that washed up in Port Orford Bay. He donated it to the city in 2006. He then refinished it in 2009 and put it in the library This talented, genrous man also made a table for the library. |
